AU-Startups, one of Africa’s leading online magazine and weekly newsletter for the latest and exclusive African startup funding news, reports, and more have named South African play-to-earn platform, Skrmiish, one of the 12 Southern African startups to look out for this year.
Skrmiish, one of the first mobile play-to-earn apps, was created in 2018 and allows players of all skill levels to earn money in every match they take part in across the AAA games they adore. The startup secured $2.5 million in a seed fundraising round in August 2022, led by Launch Africa Ventures, with the intention of achieving its long-term objective of developing a leading competitive app with digital banking for gamers worldwide.
The play-to-earn platform’s 2022, which also saw them partner with Blockchain Founders Fund (BFF) and acquire +100,000 players at low costs across more than 100 jurisdictions around the world following the launch of free-to-play offerings in 2021, seemed to have caught the attention of AU-Startups, who listed them in their list of the 12 Southern African startups to look out for this year.
Chris Heaton, the Founder & Managing Director of Skrmiish, expressed his gratitude to the publication for recognising the effort he and his team had put into building the business in a social media post saying “Thanks for noticing AU-Startups.”
Skrmiish joins the likes of AgTech startup Homefarm, health-tech startup HealthDart, healthcare technology startup Ollie Health, fitness and wellness-focused company Strove, telehealth startup Contro, payments API company Revio, e-commerce startup Qwili, computer vision and AI company EnvisionIt Deep AI, edtech startup FoondaMate, integration platform as a service (iPaaS) company Synatic, and communication platform Talk360 as some of Southern Africa’s must watch startups in 2023.
