The esports fraternity had some incredible news last week in their fight for legitimacy as the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced that an esports event will be held independently at the 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, England.

The Commonwealth Esports Championships (CEC) which will be held at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham from August 6-7 is a result of a partnership between the Global Esports Federation (GEF) and the CGF. The partnership will also see the inaugural Commonwealth Esports Forum (CEF) held at the same venue on August 5.

The games set to feature at the CEC are yet to be confirmed, however, the Global Esports Federation, which is in a strategic partnership with the CGF, is likely to include games that have already been featured at other global events such as the the upcoming 2022 Asian Games which is set to feature FIFA (made by EA SPORTS), an Asian Games version of PUBG Mobile and Arena of Valor, Dota 2, League of Legends, Dream Three Kingdoms 2, HearthStone, and Street Fighter V.

As Ghana is a member of both the member of the Commonwealth and the GEF, President of Esports Association, Ghana (EAG) Kwesi Hayford stated in an exclusive interview with the EAN that the championships are a great news for Ghana esports.

“That’s a great news for us, for Ghana we are always prepared to enter into any game even if we don’t have a first team the first thing we do is to build communities around the game and try to find people to go because as much as it is about winning tournaments, it is also about exposure because we need to expose the space to the young ones so that they can go.” the EAG President further stated

Hayford also revealed that the country will definitely be a part of the Commonwealth Esports Championship stating “We know we will be there, the reason being that it is being managed by Global Esports Federation for which we are a member so automatically Ghana is in there.”
