The Esports Association Ghana (EAG) has announced that Season 1 of the Ghana Esports League (GEL) is set to launch in May 2023 and will run until October of the same year. This historic event will be conducted entirely online, with EA Sports FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) serving as the competition’s exclusive game title. 12 of Ghana’s finest FUT teams will come together to compete for the opportunity to etch their name in Ghana’s esports history.
Make sure to mark April 26th, Wednesday, on your calendar, as registration for the limited 12 team slots will open up. Kwesi Hayford, the President of EAG, has guaranteed that no efforts will be spared in ensuring the success of the GEL. In an exclusive interview with EAN, Hayford stated, “The league is long overdue; we’ve been working and talking about it for many years. FUT is the most professional mode in the game, so it is therefore a great initiative to create that roadmap that makes our players suitable for international esports tournaments.”
When questioned about the association’s choice to begin with FUT and if it was influenced by the underwhelming performance of the Black Asteriods in the 2023 FIFAe Nation Series Online Qualifiers, where they only obtained one point out of a potential 30, Hayford affirmed, “Yes!!! It is to create a solid foundation for players.”
However, the President of EAG revealed that while FUT is the initial focus of the competition, there are plans to expand to include other titles in the near future. In an interview, the EAG President stated, “No, we’re starting with FIFA. There will be other titles.”
More details on the GEL’s rules and registration process for esports teams will be revealed in the coming week. Stay connected for the latest updates and stay informed about this exciting event.
