The Esports Association, Ghana (EAG) is set to hold its Tekken 7 qualifiers for the 2023 International Esports Federation (IESF) World Esports Championships (WEC) on the 25th and 26th of March at the Otium Game Hub in Accra, Ghana.

The event will bring together the nation’s growing fighting game community, as participants will compete for the chance to represent the West African nation at the global championship which will be held in Iaşi, Romania from August 24 to September 4. At least, that is what they would have been competing for had the EAG not confirmed that the tournament will also have a mouthwatering GH₵8,000 prize pool.

EAG President Kwesi Hayford attributed this boost to the hard work of the association’s Vice President Kobina Mensah Ewusie-Mensah, who, according to Hayford, took it upon himself to champion a Pro to Elite Championship, which in turn brought support from Kingmen and Alpha King.

“There is a fighting game community in Ghana, but hardly would you hear of a tournament, it is because there are no brands willing to support or sponsor fighting games which depict a bit of violence. The perception is that people will grow violent with fighting games, which is untrue, and therefore, there is no existence of support in whatsoever form for our community.” The EAG President stated in a LinkedIn post.

“When we announced our participation in Tekken for the International Esports Federation’s next world championship in Romania, our vice president, Kobina Mensah Ewusie-Mensah, took it upon himself to champion a Pro to Elite Championship. With that came the support of GH₵8,000 to support the National Qualifiers from Kingmen and Alpha King.”

Due to this boost, the National Qualifiers for the 2023 World Esports Championships will also break a record as the fighting game event with the biggest prize pool ever held by the Esports Association, Ghana. The prize pool distribution is as follows:

1st PlaceGH₵4,500.00
2nd PlaceGH₵2,000.00
