The power-up you missed at Gamr X
On April 2, Africa bore witness to one of the biggest esports events ever to grace the continent, Gamr X, which saw some of Africa’s best gamers battle it out for the $15,000 prize pool.
The competition which was organised by the gaming platform Gamr had everything, from intense battles to great music and an intoxicating atmosphere. However, something grabbed my attention throughout the one-day event, something that may have flown over the heads of others and that was the Red Bull Kumite branded set-up during the Street Fighter V section of the event.
The Red Bull Kumite is an annual invitational event organized by Red Bull that features the world’s top fighting game players, unforgettable storylines and a celebration of fighting games like no other.
So I got in touch with a rep from Gamr who revealed the relationship between Gamr X and Red Bull Kumite “Red Bull Kumite is a Red Bull Gaming asset, it’s a renowned world street fighter tournament played by the best street fighter players in the world.”
“With Gamr X being Africa’s biggest gaming asset, it was just the perfect fit for Red Bull to give the gamers from other parts of Africa the Red Bull Kumite experience.”
“The next edition of Red Bull Kumite will happen in Nigeria later in the year and the winner will represent Nigeria in Las Vegas to compete for the world title.”
The rep further revealed that this is only just the beginning of a healthy partnership being the two stating that the partnership is “still a work in progress and the entirety of the partnership is still in the works.”
Gamr X wrapped up on 2nd April 2022 at the Eko Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria and saw some of the best gamers from ten African countries including Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania, Kenya, Algeria, Cameroon, South Africa, Ivory Coast and hosts Nigeria compete in five game titles for a prize pool of $15,000.
