Zebra Comics & DC Comics Unite: Africa’s Superhero Moment Has Arrived
On Friday, 5th September 2025, history was made in Yaoundé. The U.S. Embassy in partnership with YALI Network Cameroon unveiled Superman: The Chariots of Gods — a groundbreaking collaboration between U.S.-based DC Comics and Cameroon’s Zebra Comics.
The event was attended by dignitaries including His Excellency Pierre Ismaël Bidoung Kpwatt, Cameroon’s Minister of Arts and Culture. For Esports Africa News, Cameroon Country Representative Ronald P. Djoko sat down with Ejob Nathanael, the Founder & CEO of Zebra Comics, to explore the vision powering Africa’s creative renaissance.

The Creative and Cultural Industry: Africa’s Next Billion-Dollar Frontier
According to Nathanael, the Creative and Cultural Industry (CCI) is more than entertainment. It’s the fusion of imagination, heritage, and technology — covering comics, gaming, fashion, film, animation, music, and literature.
In Africa, it’s becoming an economic powerhouse:
Building national pride
Creating jobs
Driving tourism
Exporting identity

Turning Stories Into Revenue
Monetization in the CCI comes from multiple streams: publishing, licensing, merchandising, streaming, partnerships, advertising, and events.
But the real magic lies in intellectual property (IP).
“A single story can grow from a comic to an animation, a video game, merchandise, even a movie,” says Nathanael.
Zebra Comics has proven that when African IP is packaged well and distributed effectively, it competes globally.

Zebra Comics: Africa’s Home for Heroes
Through the Zebra Comics App, the company has become Africa’s No.1 digital comics platform, with 100,000+ users and millions of reads every month.
- Original African webtoons and comics
- Licensed international titles
- Expansion into animation, edutainment, and merchandise
Zebra Comics’ mission is clear:
Make African stories global. Make global stories accessible to Africans.

Why the Name “Zebra”?
The choice was intentional, rooted in deep symbolism:
- Duality: Black-and-white stripes mirror life’s contrasts — joy & sorrow, tradition & modernity.
- Uniqueness: No two zebras have the same pattern, just like stories.
- Resilience: Zebras thrive in tough terrains, symbolizing African creativity’s strength.
“Just as the zebra stands out on the savannah, we want African stories to stand out on the world stage.”
Funding the Dream
Zebra Comics began with belief before funding. Nathanael invested his own resources, built a team, and grew an audience. That traction attracted giants like DC Comics, Orange Cameroon, and COL Group.
The lesson? Investors back systems that work — not ideas.

Parents & Perceptions Are Changing
Once dismissed as “just hobbies,” comics and animation are now being recognized as career paths. Zebra Comics employs 40 full-time staff and collaborates with 100+ independent African creators. Families are witnessing creativity pay bills, build businesses, and inspire the next generation.
What’s Next for Zebra Comics?
🎓 Edutainment: Interactive learning comics for schools across Africa.
🎬 Animation: Shorts debuting on the app + an animated feature film.
🌍 Global Partnerships: More international IP collaborations.
🛍️ Merchandise: Embedding Zebra Comics into kids’ everyday lives.
⚡ The Zebraverse (Godlevel Academy): A shared superhero universe reimagining African gods as teenagers, built for comics, cosplay, games, and films.
The Big Picture
Africa is the world’s last great untold story — and Zebra Comics is determined to tell it.
“African creativity is not fragile. It is strong, enduring, and ready to stand its ground globally.” – Nathanael Ejob
With Superman: The Chariots of Gods, Zebra Comics isn’t just producing comics — they’re making history.
