AFRICA GAMES WEEK LEVELS UP THIS DECEMBER
Africa Games Week (AGW) is back from 1 to 3 December at Workshop17 at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
In its 5th edition, Africa Games Week has been fine tuned to deliver an even more exceptional event than ever before. AGW has established itself as the premium business event in Africa for the video game industry, with video game developers, content creators and industry leaders coming from across Africa and the globe to connect with and grow the African Game Industry.
AGW continues to showcase the best of African gaming talent and give them every opportunity to meet with and learn from the best in the business from around the world. Speakers and sponsors for December include Google, Epic Games, Xsolla, Twitch, Focus Entertainment and XBOX, 24 Bit Games, Renderheads and the French Institute, to name a few. December sees the addition of smaller more in-depth workshops, providing attendees with practical ways to implement what they learn, and a live exhibition event to allow the public to experience the magic of the industry.
“The upcoming edition of Africa Games Week is going to be our best yet,” says Rex Bowden, co-founder and CEO of Africa Games Week. “This year we are taking the event beyond a conference to an industry- and community-building, knowledge-developing, creative-awakening, melting pot of Africa’s most amazing talent and opportunities for the gaming industry.”
The City of Cape Town is once again the host city sponsor for Africa Games Week. “Game development forms a part of the broader City of Cape Town strategies to promote the city as a premier film and media destination. Cape Town is already the country’s top game development destination, with roughly 60 percent of game development studios based in the Mother City,” says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith. “Partnering with Africa Games Week is one of the ways in which the City hopes to ensure that emerging game developers can connect with international publishers, distributors and software developers to secure investment for their ventures.”
Africa Games Week is made up of 4 significant sub-conferences across 4 industry verticals; Games for Change and Mobile Growth Summit are major international US events, Make Games Africa is in its fifth iteration and Africa StreamCon its second. Each sub-conference will have a variety of specialised speakers and panels, and smaller technical workshops, with one-on-one meetings and networking events scheduled throughout. The events overlap, so attendees can attend the areas that will offer them the most value.
“Being thrown in the deep end of the game industry after joining AGW in May, I am still amazed each day by the phenomenal games and teams from Africa challenging the international markets with diversity, culture and creativity,” says Event Director, Alexandra Pattison. “I can’t wait to meet all the leading African developers and studios we are bringing to Cape Town, and showcase them to industry players like Google, Epic, Xsolla and many more.”
Alongside the business conferences, there is a free live exhibition event at Workshop17, where the public will be able to meet and network with those at the 30+ stands; from international brands to rising stars and start ups from around Africa, to educational institutes offering game-related courses. If you have a passion for gaming, it is worth considering that the industry needs more than tech and design skills. They are businesses like any other that need talent everywhere from administration to accounting, legal, marketing and sales. The exhibition will also showcase local art installations, Year of Dogs band playing live on Saturday at lunch time and the chance to try a Virtual Reality Experience with Electric South.
