Music has always been a major part of esports/gaming. In a respawn podcast episode, we explore all the African Artistes featured in the Official EA Sports Soundtrack list since FIFA 19.

BANTU
Tinashe Sibanda grew up in Zimbabwe,  and started making beats in his mother’s living room when he was 13. Now known as Bantu, he is a Grammy-nominated artist who writes and produces tracks for a host of brand-name stars. His credits include Jason Derulo and French Montana’s “Tip Toe”; Maroon 5’s “Whiskey”; J Balvin, Camila Cabello and Pitbull’s “Hey Ma”; and Rita Ora and Chris Brown’s “Body on Me”. He’s the first African to be featured in the official fifa soundtrack in his song Jackie Chan with Dr Chaii.

Dr. Chaii as he is  professionally known was born Philip Kembo, and is a Grammy Nominated record producer and songwriter. He has co-produced and co-written for Sean Paul, Pitbull, Chris Brown, Camila Cabello, Jason Derulo, Dua Lipa, French Montana and many others. He was Born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, and also started making beats at the age of 13 when a good friend introduced him to the program FL Studio. He went on to pursue a degree in Marketing & Advertising while making music as a hobby. Chaii completed his undergraduate degree at Lancaster University and went on to obtain a masters degree in Advanced Marketing Management. Soon after graduating Dr. Chaii relocated to Los Angeles and was signed to Artist Publishing Group in August 2016.

Sampa Tembo, known professionally as Sampa the Great, is a Zambian-born Australia-based rapper and songwriter. Her debut solo album, The Return, peaked at No. 12 on the ARIA Albums Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2019 she won Best Hip Hop Release for her second single, “Final Form”. Sampa Tembo was born in 1993 in Zambia and was raised there and in Botswana, as the middle of five children

Steven Umoh, known by his stage name Obongjayar, is a Nigerian musical artist based in London. He grew up in Calabar, Nigeria and moved to live with his mother in England at the age of 17, but stayed active in the Nigerian music scene.

Before we continue, VOLTA FOOTBALL was introduced in FIFA20  as a world where the streets and stadiums influence each other. It came as a way of representing all new places and real football with the authentic culture, creativity and style of the small-sided game.

Football stripped back to its fluid, joyful, and energetic core, a small sided football experience which was one at the time one of the most requested features coming from the community for the past several years. We haven’t had something like this integrated into a single FIFA product since the days of FIFA 98.

Adedamola Adefolahan, known professionally as Fireboy DML, is a Nigerian singer who also features in FIFA 2021 with his song Scatter. He is signed to YBNL Nation, a record label founded by Nigerian rapper Olamide.

Takudzwa Victoria Rosa “Tkay” Maidza is a Zimbabwean-born Australian singer-songwriter and rapper.

Faridah Seriki, known professionally as Kah-Lo is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, best known for her song ‘Fasta’ and for her work on ‘Rinse and Repeat’ with British DJ, Riton. The track was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 59th Grammy Awards.

David Orobosa Omoregie (born 5 June 1998), also known as Santan Dave or just Dave, is a British rapper, musician, singer, songwriter, record producer and actor.

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, known professionally as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian singer and rapper.

Onipa is an Afro-Futurist project from Ghana/ London founded in 2018 by K.O.G (founder of K.O.G and the Zongo Brigade) and Tom Excell (founder of Nubiyan Twist). Alongside bandmates Finn Booth (Nubiyan Twist) and Wonky Logic (Steam Down).

Divine Ikubor (born 1 May 2000), known professionally as Rema, is a Nigerian singer and rapper. He rose to prominence with the release of the song “Iron Man”, which appeared on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist. In 2019, he signed a record deal with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records.

Jonathan Kweku Awote-Mensah, professionally known as Jae5 is a British-Ghanaian record producer and mixing engineer from Plaistow, East London. He is a Grammy Award-winning producer and is signed to Black Butter Records.

SKEPTA KNOWN AS Joseph Olaitan Adenuga Jr. was born on to Nigerian parents,[6] of respective Yoruba (paternal) and Igbo (maternal) backgrounds.

KOKOKO! is an experimental electronic music collective based in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their sound is created through homemade, unconventional instruments made from scrap, and their lyrics focus on political problems within the country.

Little Simz was born in Islington, London to Nigerian parents and is known as Simbiatu “Simbi” Abisola Abiola Ajikawo.

Pa Salieu Gaye was born in Slough, where he spent the early stages of his life. His parents moved to the UK from The Gambia.

Trio Da Kali is a griot music group from Mali constituted of three members: Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté, Lassana Diabaté and Mamadou Kouyaté. Da Kali means ‘to give a pledge’ – in this case to their musical heritage.
