Doom co-creator working on new project

Doom co-creator John Romero and his studio, Romero Games, are working on a brand-new First-Person Shooter (FPS) — one that will be utilizing Unreal Engine 5. What’s more it will purportedly be with a “major publisher.”

“It’s a new dawn for Romero Games. We’re working with a major publisher to develop John Romero’s next shooter: an all-new FPS with an original, new IP,” says Romero on Twitter.

“Our team is expanding, and we’re looking for talented people for all positions and at all experience levels, particularly those with Unreal Engine 5 experience.”

According to the studio’s website, job positions fall under the code, design, and art categories. The listings provide some hints at what kind of mechanics the game could include.

A senior multiplayer programmer position and an online architect one are listed, so it’s possible that the game will have multiplayer and online components.

No other details about the game were revealed, such as the game’s platforms, release window, or publisher.

Currently, Romero is currently working on Sigil 2, which will run on Doom 2’s engine. The studio’s last official release was 2020’s Empire of Sin.

In our Empire of Sin review we said, “All the good ideas and strong 1920s atmosphere in Empire of Sin amount to nothing in the end. The tactical combat has strong bones and some clever design, but fails to live up to its promise due to repetitive, lackluster maps and wildly unbalanced abilities.”
