The finest universities in South Africa for Game Design & Development have been revealed by EduRank, an independent metric-based ranking of 14,131 universities from 183 countries.

According to EduRank, universities were ranked based on their research performance in game design and development, revealing that the University of Cape Town (UCT) was not only the best university for Game Design & Development in South Africa but the entire African continent.

Since 2010, when UCT not only hosted the second edition of the worldwide game development competition, Global Game Jam, but also had its computer science team finish third, UCT has been pushing the African game development space.

The institution has also embraced the esports space, with Kiran Maharaj, Senior Sport Coordinator at the University of Cape Town (UCT), stating in 2020 that: “The concept of eSports is fairly new in the USSA structure, it is not even a year old yet! We only started this in September 2019 and had our first USSA tournament, where we had around about ten institutions participating and that was held as my last duties at Maties Sport in 2019. The first year is going well, Covid-19 posed some challenges but we are slowly getting there,”

The only other university ranked by EduRank was the University of Johannesburg (UJ), which was ranked as the second best for Game Design & Development and the third best on the African continent, making Cape Town and Johannesburg the best cities in South Africa to study Game Design and Development.

EduRank uses a data proprietary database with an index of 44,909,300 scientific publications and 1,237,541,960 citations to rank universities across 246 research topics.
