After 2 days, in a competition spanning 7 regions with 128 gamers participating, the maiden edition of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) eTrophy Championships came to a satisfying conclusion at the lovely Alisa Hotel on Saturday, May 14 with PlayProvince gamer Prince Jonas claiming the ultimate.

Jonas would defeat Habibu “Flow Burner Frass” Sulley – who defeated tournament favourite Frank “Wondhakid” Kpakpo in the semis – in a tense Grand Final which saw the PlayProvince gamer edge out a 4-3 aggregate victory over two legs.

The first leg would see Jonas ease to a 4-1 victory. However, Sulley would come back strongly in the second leg pushing his opponent but would ultimately fail, only securing a 2-0 result.

With a prize pool of GH₵10,000 Prince Jonas’ victory sees him secure the first-place GH₵5,000 prize with Habibu Sulley settling for the runner-up GH₵2,500 cash prize, with the third-place prize of GH₵1,500 going to Frank Kpakpo.

The cash prize wasn’t the only thing up for grabs as the trio also became the first members of Ghana’s first-ever FIFAe national team dubbed the “Black Comets.”

The GFA eTrophy Championship served as qualifiers to select the country’s 6-member national team for the 2022 FIFAe Nations Cup which is set to take place from July 27 to 30 in Denmark.

However, before making it to Denmark, the Black Comets will have to battle through the online 2022 FIFAe Nations Cup Middle East and Africa (MENA) Qualifiers where they have been drawn in Group B which will see them face off against South Africa, Palestine, Oman and Lebanon.

The GFA organised the eTrophy Championship in partnership with the Esports Association, Ghana (EAG) and according to reports, the partnership will continue with the two associations set to organise annual national championships for subsequent international tournaments.
